Chapter 15

“There he is,” Hannah said and waved.

Like idiots, the three of us turned in our seats so fast I nearly threw my back out. Mr. Gastineau wasn’t exactly what I expected. I had no idea why I thought he’d be tall and stately. He was younger than I imagined, as well. I expected an impeccably dressed old lawyer type with silver hair, piercing blue eyes, and leather briefcase in hand.

Mr. Gastineau wore a denim shirt with the sleeves rolled up and open at the collar and faded blue jeans. A lock of thick brown hair fell across his brow, which he brushed back with his hand; he was tanned and smiling, and that made him look like a young Kennedy. I watched him as he gracefully weaved his way through the restaurant to our table.

My expectations really sucked.

“Miss Hannah,” he said with a kindly smile and offered his hand. “It’s nice of you to meet me.”

“I’m glad I finally read the back of the card,” Hannah said and offered introductions.

He sat at the head of the table and looked around. “Y’all havin’ a good time? Well, given the circumstances.”

“Yes, actually,” I said. “We just took a swamp tour. And we’ve been to Marie Laveau’s.”

“And Café du Monde,” Hannah added.

“Well, then you’re off to a good start. The cemetery is next,” he said, then turned beet red. “I meant the tour.”

“I know,” Hannah said kindly.

I could tell she liked this guy, and I didn’t know why that bothered me. I tried not to stare at him while he made small talk with the rest of them. The server came up, and he ordered a sweet tea—I felt my blood sugar level go up just at the mention of it.

“So,” Charlie said. “The request on your business card, Mr. Gastineau.”

“Yeah,” he said. “Let’s forget the Mr. Gastineau. It’s Remy.”

Charlie nodded and waited for Remy to continue.

“I don’t know if I’m sure of what to think or where to start…” Remy stopped and once again brushed the thick lock of hair away from his brow. Good grief, man, get a haircut or use a comb.

“Start at the beginning, Remy,” Hannah said.

Remy sat back when the server came to the table. He took a drink of tea first. “I became Walt’s lawyer when he moved here with Judith. I thought it was curious because he could have used Judith’s family lawyer. I expected that. But he said he wanted his own, and he felt he could trust me.”

“With what?” Charlie asked.

“I don’t know. That’s the problem.”

“Why did he feel he could trust you?” I asked. “You didn’t know him.”

“Oh, I’m sorry. We had met at a party. I don’t normally attend such stuffy gatherings, but my girlfriend’s father is a big lawyer, and she was invited. I met Walt there, and we just hit it off right away.” He stopped and smiled, as if remembering the meeting. “He said he felt out of place all dressed up in a ‘monkey suit,’ as he put it.
